Facts About Spina Bifida

  • Every hour, every day, somewhere in the US a baby is born with spina bifida.
  • Spina Bifida is the leading disabler of newborns in America.
  • Spina Bifida happens more frequently than muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, polio, and cystic fibrosis combined... yet until recently most people never heard of it.
  • You can decrease your chance of having a baby with spina bifida by taking 0.4 milligrams (or 400 micrograms) of folic acid every day.
  • Today's medical advances in the fields of  neurosurgery and urology (early treatment is important) are making it possible for a majority of infants born with Spina Bifida to live into adulthood.
